State of Delaware Archaeologist & President of The Archaeology Society of Delaware, Craig Lukezic, will present:
Kidnapped: The Experience of Slavery and Freedom of Aaron Cooper in Delaware
The story of Aaron Cooper can be told through historic documents and court records - and archaeology.
In 1811, before the era of the Underground Railroad, Cooper, a free African American, was kidnapped by a slave trader and sold as a slave in Natchez, Mississippi. Through community action in the legal process, Cooper eventually regained his freedom and returned to Delaware.
This presentation endeavors to summarize the research from historians and archaeologists in order to recreate the world of Aaron Cooper.
