According to Eric Foner, William Still in Philadelphia and Sydney Gay in New York City recorded a total of 214 freedom seekers in the 1850s, most of them, 94, came from Maryland. I have identified at least 34 from Cecil County. Twenty-six came from the area between Elkton and the county boundary at the Sassafras River, and seven from the Perryville-Charlestown area at the Head of the Chesapeake. All of them south of the red line indicated on the map. William Still noted the arrival of only one from the county that came from north of the line, Henry Fields, the subject of an earlier post. Why? I will come back to that question in a follow-up post.
